Fighting Spirit: Mashiba vs. Kimura
Oshimeter
Synopsis
For Tatsuya Kimura, being the guy who hasn't made it yet is getting old. While his gym buddies Ippo and Takamura are out there holding championship belts, Kimura is still grinding — talented, dedicated, but stuck just outside the spotlight. Then he gets his shot: a title match against Ryo Mashiba, the current Junior Lightweight champion whose "Hitman" style has wrecked everyone who's stepped in front of him, including Ichirou Miyata, one of the sharpest boxers around. So who does Kimura train with to prepare? Miyata himself — the guy who lost to Mashiba and knows exactly how dangerous he is. That's a great setup right there. This is a single OVA from Madhouse, the same studio behind the full Hajime no Ippo series, and the animation holds up. The boxing feels physical and technical — not just two guys swinging wildly, but actual strategy and counter-punching and desperation. What makes it land emotionally is that Kimura isn't the main character of the bigger story, and the show knows it. His fight matters precisely because he's been overlooked. If you've seen Megalo Box and liked the underdog angle, or grew up watching Ashita no Joe, this hits a similar nerve — quieter than either but surprisingly affecting. You don't need to have watched the full series to follow it, though it helps to know who these people are.
