Synopsis

With roughly a year left before total human extinction, the only clue points to a city in Japan circa 2004. That's the setup for Fate/Grand Order: First Order, a TV special that serves as the entry point into the massive Fate/Grand Order universe. Ritsuka Fujimaru is a fresh recruit at Chaldea, a security organization that monitors the future using a mix of magic and science. When their predictions suddenly show human extinction by the end of 2016, Ritsuka and Mash Kyrielight — a quiet, mysterious girl with more going on than she lets on — get thrown back in time to Fuyuki City during the Fifth Holy Grail War. Except the Fuyuki they arrive in is a scorched wasteland crawling with hostile Servants, legendary figures from history and myth summoned as weapons. What follows is a tense, action-packed hour of two underprepared people trying to survive a timeline that's gone completely wrong. The Fate franchise has always been good at making you care about its version of historical figures, and this special leans into that while keeping the mystery of what broke the timeline front and center. If you liked the time-travel stakes of Steins;Gate or the way Re:Zero drops its protagonist into impossible situations, this hits a similar nerve. It's a single episode from Lay-duce, so the commitment is low — worth checking out if you're Fate-curious.

Quick Takes

The movie cover the whole 1st arc of the game, not saying it's bad but well it's the start of the journey so everything must be explained, which i kinda hate since I already know the story. But overall it's enjoyable show with great opening explanation. Hope other arc got anime.
The soundtrack and camera work made this feel so cinematic! It flows like a game with a fun character intro and non-stop fights. The stakes got surprisingly high, even if the villain was predictable. A bit confused by the logic near the climax, but a solid watch overall.
Ah - the beginning of FGO. A must watch for FGO beginners or for people who are starting with Fate. It HAS a lot of jargons but the movie tried to explain it briefly. If you've watched the other Fate animes, this has a different-ish take with it's storyline. It's more on lores and world building. Enjoy the dive!
