Detective Conan Movie 08: Magician of the Silver Sky
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Kaitou Kid — a phantom thief who steals jewels and leaves behind theatrical warnings — announces he's coming for famous actress Juri Maki's prized gemstone, the Star Sapphire, sending her a calling card like he's daring people to stop him. She hires bumbling detective Kogorou Mouri to protect it, and naturally, his daughter Ran and the pint-sized genius Conan tag along. The heist is set to go down during the closing night of Juri's stage play at a brand-new space theater, which already sounds like a setup where things go sideways fast. Then the gang ends up on a private airplane, and the stakes climb considerably from there. The whole thing has that classic Detective Conan rhythm — Conan quietly solving everything while the adults take all the credit, sprinkled with genuinely tense moments and enough comedy to keep it from feeling heavy. The cat-and-mouse between Conan and Kid is the real draw here, because Kid isn't exactly a villain — he's more of a wildcard who makes every scene unpredictable. If you've ever enjoyed Lupin III and appreciated a thief who operates more like a showman than a criminal, Kid scratches that same itch. Fans of Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo will also feel at home with the puzzle-box mystery structure. As far as standalone Conan movies go, this one gives you a contained, entertaining story without needing much prior knowledge of the series.
