Castle in the Sky
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a girl wearing a blazing crystal pendant falls out of the sky and lands right into the arms of a boy who works in a mine, an adventure begins. That's how Pazu meets Sheeta, and from there it's a chase across a gorgeous steampunk world filled with airships, pirates, ancient robots, and a floating castle that shouldn't exist. Pazu has spent his whole life dreaming about Laputa, the legendary city in the clouds that his father once glimpsed. Sheeta's amulet seems to be the key to finding it, which means everyone — the military, a power-hungry government agent, and a rowdy family of sky pirates led by the incredible Captain Dola — wants to get their hands on her. This is Hayao Miyazaki's first film under Studio Ghibli, and you can feel the pure joy of world-building in every frame. Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack does a lot of the heavy lifting emotionally, giving quiet moments just as much weight as the action scenes. The whole thing moves with this sense of wonder and momentum that never really lets up across its two hours. If you enjoyed the adventure and retro-tech vibes of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water or The Magnificent Kotobuki, this is the movie that basically set the template. It's a 1986 film that still feels completely alive — the kind of story where friendship, courage, and a really good pair of goggles can take you anywhere.
