Captain Tsubasa (2018)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At just 11 years old, Tsubasa Oozora lives and breathes soccer — not in the casual way most kids do, but in the way where every waking thought loops back to the ball at his feet. When he moves to Nankatsu City with his mom, he immediately runs into Genzo Wakabayashi, a goalkeeper so good he basically runs the local soccer scene, and Roberto Hongo, a retired Brazilian pro who sees something special in Tsubasa. From there, it's all about proving himself on the pitch and dragging his teammates along for the ride. This is a 2018 remake of the classic manga by David Production, and the animation holds up its end of the bargain — matches feel kinetic and dramatic, with shots that bend physics in ways that shouldn't work but absolutely do. The kids pull off techniques that would make actual professionals question reality, and somehow the show earns every ridiculous moment because the emotional stakes are always grounded in friendship and effort. The pacing across 52 episodes gives each rival and teammate room to breathe, which keeps matches from feeling repetitive. If you liked Inazuma Eleven's over-the-top soccer energy but want something a bit more grounded in its character work, or if Days scratched that team sports itch and you want more, Captain Tsubasa fits right in that sweet spot. It's pure shounen sports storytelling — rivalries, growth, and matches where everything is on the line.
