Synopsis
At just 11 years old, Tsubasa Oozora already eats, sleeps, and breathes soccer — and he's moved to a new city just to chase a shot at competing against the best elementary school teams in Japan. That's the kind of kid he is. When he arrives in Nankatsu, a city famous for its youth soccer programs, he quickly finds out the competition is no joke — especially Genzo Wakabayashi, a goalkeeper who makes stopping shots look effortless and humiliating. What unfolds is a story about a kid who refuses to treat soccer as anything less than his entire reason for existing, pushing himself against rivals who are genuinely good enough to shut him down. The matches themselves lean heavily into the dramatic — think physics-defying kicks and slow-motion moments where the ball seems to carry actual emotional weight. It's the kind of sports anime where the sport feels mythologized rather than realistic, which is part of the charm. If you liked the underdog energy in Haikyuu!! or the intense rival dynamics in Diamond no Ace, this scratches a similar itch, just with a much older, rawer style. Worth knowing: this 128-episode TV series from 1983 directly inspired real professional soccer players worldwide, which says something about how deeply it lands. It's not polished by modern standards, but the passion underneath it is completely genuine.
