Synopsis

After an earthquake levels Tokyo, the Genom Corporation rebuilds the city using humanoid robots called Boomers — cheap, efficient, and now increasingly prone to going violently haywire. The AD Police are supposed to handle the problem, but they're outgunned and underfunded. Enter the Knight Sabers: four women in advanced powered armor who operate completely off the books, and they're the only ones actually getting the job done. Linna Yamazaki moves to the city chasing something she can't quite name, and when she stumbles onto what the Knight Sabers really are, she decides she wants in. The team already has Priss, a rock singer with a short fuse; Sylia, the quietly intense leader who runs a boutique as cover; and Nene, who works AD Police dispatch by day and hacks systems by night. The cyberpunk aesthetic here is dense and atmospheric — rain-slicked streets, corporate megastructures, neon everywhere — and the rock soundtrack fits the whole thing like a glove. The character dynamics carry the show just as much as the action does, which keeps the 26 episodes from feeling like pure mech fights. If you enjoyed the grimy urban texture of Akira or want something in the same neighborhood as Blue Gender's human-versus-machine tension but with a tighter, character-driven focus, this one holds up. It's a late-90s TV series that knows exactly what it wants to be.
