Synopsis
What starts as a simple hack into a classified government system — Joe Takami chasing down information on a girl he can't stop thinking about — quickly turns into a death sentence when he stumbles onto evidence of a secret genetic experiment instead. That's the setup for Makyuu Senjou, a two-episode OVA from 1991 that leans hard into late-80s cyberpunk paranoia. The twist that stings most is that Joe's own best friend and his personal computer get turned against him, so he's not just running from faceless agents — he's running from people he trusted. The antagonists are high-tech ninjas, which sounds ridiculous but lands as genuinely threatening here. And somewhere in the middle of all this, Joe starts discovering that he's not exactly a normal person. The action is brutal in that early-90s OVA way, somewhere between Baoh and Cyber City Oedo 808 in terms of violence and pacing. If you liked The Guyver's formula of an ordinary guy uncovering something dangerous about his own biology while people try to kill him, this scratches a similar itch. It's short, it's bleak, and it doesn't waste time on setup. Two episodes means it moves fast, so don't expect a lot of breathing room — just a guy trying to survive long enough to understand what's happening to him.
