Beyond the Boundary

Synopsis
A bespectacled high school girl and the last of her clan, Mirai Kuriyama can turn her blood into a sword — she's also broke, and honestly kind of bad at her job hunting supernatural creatures called youmu. When she panics and stabs Akihito Kanbara on the school rooftop, she discovers he's a half-youmu who can't die — which makes him the perfect practice dummy. What starts as an awkward, slightly messed-up arrangement between two outcasts gradually becomes a genuine friendship as Akihito pulls Mirai into his circle, including the Nase siblings, a pair of Spirit World warriors with their own complicated family dynamics. The group balances mundane school life with hunting down manifestations of human negativity, and the show finds a comfortable rhythm shifting between goofy slice-of-life moments and legitimately well-choreographed action scenes. This is Kyoto Animation at 12 episodes, so every frame looks gorgeous — the fight sequences especially have a fluidity that most action anime would kill for. The blood-weapon concept gives the battles a distinct visual identity, and Hikaru Nanase's soundtrack ties the emotional beats together without overdoing it. If you liked the supernatural banter of Bakemonogatari or the youmu-hunting vibe of Noragami but want something with tighter pacing and KyoAni's production polish, this fits right in that space. It gets heavier than the early episodes suggest, so give it a few episodes to find its footing.
