Berserk (2016)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Scarred head to toe, branded with a mark that attracts demons to him every single night, and hauling a sword the size of a door, Guts is a man with no reprieve. That's his life now. No rest, no safety, just an endless parade of monsters trying to kill him while he hunts down the person who ruined his existence — someone he once called a friend. This 12-episode TV series picks up after the events of the Golden Age arc, dropping you into Guts' post-betrayal world where he's wandering through a dark medieval hellscape with nothing but rage and a massive blade called the Dragonslayer. Along the way he picks up a tiny elf named Puck and a scrappy kid named Isidro, which gives the relentless grimness some breathing room. But make no mistake, this is a brutal show. The horror elements are real, the violence is unflinching, and the psychological weight Guts carries seeps into every scene. Fair warning — the CG animation from GEMBA and Millepensee is polarizing. Some people can't get past it. But if you can adjust, the story underneath is still Berserk, and Berserk's narrative is one of the darkest and most emotionally layered things in manga or anime. If you liked the moral complexity of Vinland Saga, the monster-hunting atmosphere of Claymore, or the demonic despair of Devilman Crybaby, this scratches a similar itch. Just know what you're walking into — it's heavy, it's bleak, and it doesn't hold your hand.
