Battle Athletes
Oshimeter
Synopsis
By the year 4999, warfare has been replaced with intergalactic sports competitions, which honestly sounds like a much better deal. The most prestigious prize is the Cosmo Beauty title — an all-female athletic championship held aboard a space station university — and Akari Kanzaki has just enrolled hoping to claim it. Her mom held the title once, so expectations are not exactly low. Akari herself starts out pretty rough, more stumbling than competing, which makes her weirdly easy to root for when she starts finding her footing and forming real friendships with her fellow athletes. The show leans into lighthearted comedy while still delivering genuine sports rivalry tension, and the futuristic setting gives everything a fun visual flair that keeps it from feeling like a standard underdog story. It's a 6-episode OVA from AIC, so it moves fast and doesn't overstay its welcome. The ecchi elements are present but not overwhelming — think less fanservice showcase, more 90s anime energy. If you enjoyed the earnest competitive spirit of Kaleido Star or Princess Nine, this hits a similar note. It's not trying to reinvent anything, but it nails the combination of personal growth, scrappy determination, and ridiculous futuristic sports in a way that feels genuinely charming rather than hollow. Worth a weekend afternoon if you want something light with actual heart behind it.
