Attacker You!
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A 13-year-old ball of chaos from Osaka named You Hazuki moves to Tokyo and immediately decides she's going to be a volleyball star, despite having zero actual volleyball skills. What she does have is a ridiculous vertical leap, an inability to back down from anything, and an instant crush on the boys' team captain, Sho Takiki. Her new school's coach, Daimon, is the kind of old-school drill sergeant who makes players earn every inch of court time, and the team's ace, Nami Hayase, wants nothing to do with this loud, clumsy newcomer. So the setup is classic underdog stuff — raw talent versus refined skill, stubbornness versus discipline — but what makes this 58-episode TV series work is how it blends punishing sports drama with genuine shoujo heart. You isn't your typical delicate 80s heroine. She's loud, she's reckless, she gets knocked down constantly, and she keeps getting back up because that's just who she is. The romance threads are sweet without overtaking the volleyball, and the comedy keeps things from getting too heavy during the training arcs. If you grew up on Attack No. 1 or Aim for the Ace, this is their spiritual successor with more personality. And if you came to sports anime through Haikyuu and want to see where a lot of those underdog tropes originated, this 1984 Knack Productions gem is worth the deep dive. Fun fact: in Europe, this show basically created an entire generation of women's volleyball players.
