Area 88
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A career as a commercial pilot, a woman he loved, a future worth building — Shin Kazama had everything lined up. Then his best friend handed him a pen and lied about what he was signing. One forged contract later, Shin is stranded at Area 88, a remote desert airbase in the middle of a Middle Eastern civil war, flying dangerous combat missions as a mercenary just to earn enough money to buy his way out. The catch? The price for freedom is steep, and every mission might be his last. This 3-episode OVA from 1985 doesn't glamorize any of it. The aerial combat is intense and technically grounded, but the real weight comes from watching Shin slowly reckon with what survival is doing to him. There's a fiancée back in Japan, a friend who betrayed him, and no clean answers. If you liked the moral grittiness of Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt or the wartime atmosphere of Kyokkou no Ginyoku, Area 88 scratches a similar itch with a more personal, grounded story. It's not an action romp — it's a slow burn about what it costs to keep going when the situation you're in was never your choice. Three episodes, tight pacing, and a tone that trusts you to sit with the discomfort. Worth the two-hour commitment.
