Synopsis
After uprooting his life from a small northern town, Zuo Xiaochuan arrives at a middle school in Nanjing, only to immediately hit a problem: his new school doesn't have a basketball team. Not "the team is bad" — there literally isn't one. So he links up with Cai Zhen, and the two of them start recruiting classmates who have basically never touched a basketball. You can guess how the early practices go. This ONA from Reiki Eyes Animation leans hard into the comedy side of sports anime, where half the fun is watching a bunch of clueless kids slowly figure out what a pick-and-roll is while fumbling through drills and arguing with each other. But underneath the jokes, there's genuine progression — these characters actually grow, build chemistry, and start gunning for real tournament play. One thing that sets it apart is the setting. The show uses real Nanjing landmarks as backdrops, which gives it a grounded, lived-in feel you don't always get from sports anime. It's not trying to be flashy or over-the-top with superpowered moves. If you liked the underdog energy of Slam Dunk or the team-building arc in Kuroko's Basketball but want something more low-key and comedic, this hits that spot. Fans of Left-Hand Layup will also find familiar ground here — scrappy team, school setting, characters learning the sport from basically zero. It's warm, funny, and pretty easy to just settle into.
