Adieu Galaxy Express 999
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Two years after completing his journey on the Galaxy Express 999, Tetsurou Hoshino returns to find Earth a warzone. The Machine Empire didn't go quietly after Andromeda fell — they're still out there, still converting humans into machines, and now the fight has come home. Tetsurou, older and harder, is running with the resistance when a recorded message from Maetel pulls him back to the 999 for one more ride. This 1981 movie from Toei Animation is the direct sequel to the original Galaxy Express 999 film, and it carries that same Leiji Matsumoto DNA — vast, lonely space, trains cutting through star fields, and a story that keeps asking what it actually means to be human. The tone is more weathered this time. Tetsurou isn't the wide-eyed kid he was. There's a melancholy running underneath the adventure that hits differently once you've seen the first film, though you can follow along without it. The retro-futuristic art style is an acquired taste, but if you've ever connected with Space Battleship Yamato or Captain Harlock, this sits comfortably in that same corner of classic anime. It has that same feeling of something epic happening at the edge of the universe, with a surprisingly personal story at its center. The ending theme, 'SAYONARA' by Mary MacGregor, will stay with you longer than you expect. This is quiet, emotional sci-fi from an era when anime took its time.
