Synopsis

At 23 years old, Yuri Katsuki has just bombed at the Grand Prix Final and is seriously considering quitting figure skating. He heads home to his family's hot spring inn in rural Japan, stress-eats pork cutlets, and generally wallows. Then a video of him drunkenly nailing his idol's skating routine goes viral, and said idol — five-time world champion Victor Nikiforov — shows up at his doorstep, naked in the hot spring, announcing he's going to be Yuri's coach. That's the setup, and from there it becomes one of the most emotionally grounded sports anime out there. The skating sequences are gorgeous — MAPPA went all-in on the choreography, and you can feel the weight and momentum in every jump and spin. But the real draw is watching Yuri wrestle with anxiety and self-doubt in a way that feels uncomfortably real, while his relationship with Victor evolves from fan-and-idol into something genuinely tender. The show doesn't shy away from that either, which was a big deal in 2016 and still holds up. The soundtrack is fantastic, with 'History Maker' lodging itself permanently in your brain. It's only 12 episodes, so the pacing stays tight. If you liked the competitive energy and character dynamics in SK8 the Infinity or the emotional beats in Free!, this is right in that lane — just on ice, with better music, and a love story that actually commits.

To be honest, I'm not really a fan of figure skating, but I was so nervous watching to see if Yuri would land all his jumps; I felt like I was right there in the audience. It’s so adorable to see how much Victor cares about Yuri! 😭
I love how Yuri is getting to know himself better and gaining confidence in his close ones.
He’s realizing that he’s not alone and that everyone supports him. It’s so interesting to see him focus more on the present instead of what he has lost!
Even though Yuri is the protagonist, I absolutely loved Yurio's character development and how he found his agape through his love for his grandfather. His choreography was spectacular, without a doubt! I'm looking forward to seeing how his character continues to grow.
