EPISODE CONTEXT
Coming off Yugi's confrontation with a Kaiba impersonator in episode 10, 'Give up the Ghost,' the series pivots to Joey's individual growth within the Duelist Kingdom tournament — a necessary shift this early in a 224-episode run. This duel against Rex Raptor establishes Joey as more than Yugi's sidekick and feeds directly into 'Trial by Red-Eyes,' where his skills face an even greater test, continuing a character development thread that runs throughout the season's first major arc.
