Synopsis
Watanuki Kimihiro has been plagued by spirits for as long as he can remember — relentless ones that refuse to leave him alone. To get rid of this curse, he's stuck working for Yuuko Ichihara, a sake-loving witch who runs a shop that grants wishes — but only if you can pay the price. That price is never money. It's always something personal, something equivalent to what you're asking for, and it's almost never what you'd expect. xxxHOLiC◆Kei picks up right where the first season left off, but the tone shifts noticeably darker. The quirky supernatural errands are still there, and Watanuki still bickers with his deadpan rival Doumeki in ways that are genuinely funny, but the mysteries this time carry more weight. There's a stronger thread connecting everything — questions about fate, about whether coincidences actually exist, and about what Watanuki's relationships with Doumeki and his crush Himawari are really built on. CLAMP's art style translates beautifully here, all impossibly long limbs and swirling smoke, courtesy of Production I.G. The 13-episode run keeps things tight with no filler. If you liked the atmospheric, episodic spirit encounters in Natsume's Book of Friends or the eerie folklore vibes of Mushishi, this hits a similar nerve but with more humor and a sharper ongoing plot. Fans of Mononoke's surreal visual storytelling will feel at home too. Fair warning: it connects to Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle in ways that actually matter, so that rabbit hole goes deep if you want it to.
