Volicia of Pluto Chapter 2: Ultramarine
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Before a leg injury killed her future, Akio Hoshigami was going to be a track star. Now she's piloting a giant robot powered by her best friend's soul, which is a pretty brutal upgrade. Welcome to Bousei no Volicia, a movie trilogy set in a world where humanity is down to its last stronghold and the only thing standing between extinction and a couple of cosmic-level threats called Usurpers is an astronomy club and their mecha. In this second chapter, Akio learns the full scope of what's happening — two Usurpers remain, the Fire of Life is fading, and she's going to have to choose between holding onto the happiness she has right now with Ayano or giving everything to a future she might not get to see. The girls love angle here isn't window dressing; it's the emotional core of the whole sacrifice narrative. Think the psychological weight of Neon Genesis Evangelion mixed with the intimate, fate-bound relationship dynamics of Kannazuki no Miko. There's also a distinctly indie visual style that sets it apart from the usual polished mecha fare — rougher, more expressive, like the animation itself is straining under the story's emotional gravity. If you liked Blue Drop for its slow-burn sci-fi romance layered over existential stakes, this hits a similar frequency but with more urgency. It's a single movie, so it doesn't waste your time getting where it needs to go.
