Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of a New Era
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Racehorses lend their names to sprinting girls who chase glory on the tracks — and then perform idol concerts afterward. That's the Uma Musume premise, and honestly, it has no right being as compelling as it is. This movie follows Jungle Pocket, a brash and self-assured horse girl who's been doing casual freestyle races until she watches Fuji Kiseki absolutely dominate a top-tier Twinkle Series event. Something clicks, and now she wants that stage for herself. She enrolls at Tracen Academy, starts stacking wins under her trainer Tanabe, and quickly earns her way into the big leagues — where the competition is a completely different animal. The film is produced by CygamesPictures and adapts characters from the mobile game, but you don't need any prior knowledge to get into this one. It works as a standalone entry point. The racing sequences have real weight to them — dynamic animation, a killer soundtrack that shifts between pumping race themes and idol performances, and genuine tension even though you're watching girls named after real Japanese racehorses sprint down a track. The tone stays uplifting without being saccharine, carried by Jungle Pocket's raw confidence running headfirst into the reality of elite competition. If you liked the camaraderie and performance energy of Love Live or the way K-On! made you care about characters doing something seemingly low-stakes, this hits a similar nerve. Aikatsu fans will also feel right at home with the sports-meets-idol blend. It's earnest in a way that just works.
