The Wallflower
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After her crush brutally rejected her, basically calling her ugly, Sunako Nakahara took it personally — like, retreated-into-darkness-and-became-obsessed-with-horror-dolls-and-anatomy-models personally. She's a gloomy, gore-loving recluse who gets nosebleeds around attractive people because beauty literally repulses her. Then her aunt ships her off to live in a mansion with four ridiculously good-looking guys — Kyohei, Ranmaru, Takenaga, and Yuki — and tells them to turn Sunako into a refined lady or their rent triples. You can probably guess how well that goes. The 25-episode TV series from Nippon Animation is this chaotic tug-of-war where the boys keep trying to civilize Sunako while she keeps dragging everyone into her creepy little world. The art style actually shifts between gothic chibi Sunako and her normal form depending on her mood, which is a weirdly effective visual gag that never gets old. Underneath all the comedy, there's a genuine thread about beauty standards and self-acceptance that gives it more weight than you'd expect. If you liked the reverse harem energy and humor of Ouran High School Host Club, this hits a similar sweet spot but darker and weirder. Fans of Fruits Basket's slow character growth through comedy will find something here too, though the tone is way more unhinged. It's a shoujo comedy that's not afraid to let its heroine be genuinely strange, and that's what makes it work.
