Lovely Complex
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At 172 cm, Risa Koizumi towers over most of the guys in her class. Atsushi Ootani is 156 cm. In a high school where everyone already treats them like a comedy act, the last thing either of them needs is to catch feelings for each other. Lovely★Complex is a 24-episode TV series that follows these two as they go from bickering constantly to something messier and more complicated. They like the same music, finish each other's jokes, and argue like they've been married for thirty years — but when Risa starts realizing her feelings aren't just friendly anymore, she has to figure out how to get through to a guy who genuinely cannot take a hint. Ootani's obliviousness is almost impressive in how consistent it is. The height gag sounds like it would get old, but it's really just the entry point for something more honest — Risa's insecurity about not fitting the "ideal girl" mold, Ootani's own hangups, and the way both of them have to grow past what they think a relationship is supposed to look like. It's funny in a loud, expressive, very shoujo way, but the emotional beats land harder than you'd expect. If you liked the dynamic energy of Kare Kano or the slow-burn frustration of A Condition Called Love, this hits a similar nerve. Toei Animation adapted the manga in 2007, and the comedic timing still holds up. It's the kind of romance where you're rooting for them while also wanting to shake them both.
