The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Nine out of ten fantasy anime hand you a teenager with a special power and send them on their way. Rick Gladiator is a 30-year-old guild clerk who's spent his adult life filing paperwork for adventurers instead of being one. In a world where people develop magical abilities before 20 or not at all, he's basically a lost cause — at least that's what everyone tells him. Then he stumbles into Reanette, a dark elf from the legendary Orichalcum Fist party, and they agree to train him. "Train" is generous. It's closer to two years of getting absolutely destroyed by some of the strongest adventurers alive. By the time Rick shows up to take his beginner E-Rank exam, he's hilariously overpowered for it, but nobody knows that yet. The fun is watching examiners and fellow rookies write him off as some washed-up old guy while he casually handles everything thrown at him. This 12-episode TV series from 2024 leans into that gap between perception and reality for both comedy and surprisingly satisfying action beats. The whole "underestimated older protagonist" angle gives it a different energy than your typical power fantasy. If you liked the grounded adventuring vibe of Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions or the guild dynamics of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, this scratches a similar itch — just with a protagonist who's old enough to have a mortgage.
