Synopsis

Wataru Ikusabe was only 9 years old when he saved an entire magical world by climbing a tiered mountain realm, fighting through RPG-style levels with a chibi mecha dragon at his side. Now, a few months later, the magical land of Soukaizan is in trouble again, and Wataru gets pulled back in for round two. This 1989 Sunrise OVA picks up right where the original series left off — Wataru, his super-deformed mecha partner Ryujinmaru, the samurai Shibaraku, and the spirited Himiko reassemble to deal with a fresh wave of evil threatening their hard-won peace. The whole thing is only two episodes, so it's basically a compact little victory lap for fans of the original. The mecha designs here are worth mentioning — they're these adorable squat robots that look like someone crossed a Gundam with a Saturday morning cartoon, and somehow the action still feels satisfying. The tone stays firmly in comedic adventure territory, with an energetic soundtrack driving everything forward. Think of it like a fantasy quest structured as a video game, complete with tiered levels and boss fights, but wrapped in genuinely funny character dynamics. If you liked Madou King Granzort or NG Knight Lamune & 40, this is cut from the same cloth — that late-80s kid-friendly mecha adventure style that Sunrise did so well. Even fans of older shows like Yuusha Raideen might appreciate the lineage. Short, fun, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
