The Moon on a Rainy Night
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Soaked by a sudden downpour and rushing to make her piano lesson on time, Saki Kindaichi crashes into a stranger on the street. The girl picks up Saki's scattered sheet music, hands her a band-aid, and walks away — all without saying a single word. It's a small moment, but it sticks with Saki. The next day she finds out this quiet, striking girl is Kanon Oikawa, a new classmate who is hard of hearing and keeps pretty much everyone at arm's length. Saki can't quite let it go, though, and starts trying to bridge the gap between them — learning to communicate in ways that go beyond just talking. This TV series from studio CompTown, adapted from a web manga, is a gentle school drama that takes its time building the connection between two girls who express themselves very differently. The pacing is slow and deliberate, the kind of show where a glance or a gesture carries more weight than a monologue. If you liked the empathy and sensitivity around hearing impairment in A Silent Voice, or the careful, honest way Bloom Into You handles a girls' love story unfolding in a school setting, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of Whisper Me a Love Song will also feel at home here. It's quiet and emotional without being melodramatic — more about the small, awkward, beautiful steps two people take toward actually understanding each other.
