After a life of hardship, a young woman finds her life irrevocably changed when she's purchased at a slave auction by a powerful, beast-headed mage.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Chise Hatori is just fifteen years old when she sells herself at an underground auction because she'd rather belong to a stranger than to no one at all. She has spent her whole life seeing things nobody else can — spirits, fae, creatures from folklore — and it's made her an outcast. The buyer turns out to be Elias Ainsworth, a ancient magus with a bone skull for a face who lives in a cozy English cottage surrounded by faeries. He tells Chise two things: she's going to be his apprentice, and she's going to be his bride. That premise sounds way darker than the show actually plays out, though. This is a 24-episode TV series from Wit Studio that's really about two broken people slowly figuring out what it means to care about someone. Chise is learning she has value beyond what she can offer others, and Elias is this centuries-old being who genuinely doesn't understand human emotions and is trying to learn them through her. The folklore elements are gorgeous — every episode pulls from different mythological traditions, and the animation gives the magical world this watercolor warmth that's hard to shake. The soundtrack is the kind of thing you'll look up afterward. If you liked the quiet emotional weight of Natsume's Book of Friends, or the fairytale romance of Howl's Moving Castle, this hits a similar space. Fans of Snow White with the Red Hair will also find something here, though the tone leans more melancholic. It's a slow burn, but it earns every quiet moment.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

Wit Studio's lush landscapes and creature designs are a huge draw for you
A protagonist who starts broken and slowly finds self-worth across 24 episodes sounds rewarding

❌ SKIP IF...

You want a tight overarching plot—this season's episodic structure can feel disjointed at times
Chibi comedy bits popping up during serious emotional scenes would kill the mood for you
Elias's motivations stay vague for most of the season—that lack of clarity will frustrate you
