Synopsis

Beneath a permanent cartoon moon that's literally bleeding from its teeth, Death City sprawls out in every direction — and that's just the skyline. The Death Weapon Meister Academy, run by a goofy version of the Grim Reaper, trains students in pairs — one person fights, the other transforms into their weapon. Maka Albarn wields her partner Soul Eater as a scythe, the loudmouth ninja Black Star swings around the endlessly patient Tsubaki, and Death the Kid (the Reaper's own son, who has crippling symmetry OCD) dual-wields twin pistol sisters Liz and Patty. Their goal: collect 99 evil souls and one witch soul to forge a Death Scythe worthy of the Shinigami. The early episodes play like monster-of-the-week missions with a lot of personality clashes and comedy, but the world starts pulling toward something darker as a Kishin — basically a god of madness — threatens everything. Studio Bones animated this in 2008 with a Gothic, Tim Burton-esque art style that still looks unlike anything else in anime. Crooked buildings, sun and moon faces dripping blood, Halloween vibes year-round. The soundtrack goes hard too, mixing hip-hop beats with rock. If you liked the squad dynamics and supernatural action of Blue Exorcist or Bleach, or the dark fantasy tone of D.Gray-man, this 51-episode run hits a similar sweet spot. It diverges from the manga toward the end, which is worth knowing going in, but the ride there is genuinely fun.

it was so heartwarming to see crona maintain full faith in maka even when everyone else was doubting her. the ending definitely felt a bit abrupt and anticlimactic, but i am just glad they found a way to wrap it up with bravery. time to read the manga
i really perceive the bond between maka and soul as something so far beyond just love or friendship at this point. it is such a pure connection. i am honestly so hyped for this final fight to begin
i always absolutely love whenever soul gets to put on a musical performance. it adds such an artistic touch to the combat. getting all three of them set up for this massive battle has me so incredibly excited
