Synopsis
Burnt out on the pressure-cooker academics of Sapporo, city kid Yuugo Hachiken does the most dramatic thing possible to escape his overbearing parents: he enrolls in an agricultural boarding school in the middle of rural Hokkaido. He figures if he can ace regular academics, a farming school should be a breeze. He is very, very wrong. Turns out, knowing calculus doesn't help much when you're chasing runaway calves at 5 AM or trying not to cry while shoveling manure. His classmates — kids who grew up on farms and actually know what they want to do with their lives — make him feel like the clueless one for the first time ever. There's Aki Mikage, whose family raises racehorses, and Ichirou Komaba, a dairy farmer's son gunning for pro baseball, and they all have this grounded sense of purpose that Hachiken just doesn't have yet. This 11-episode TV series from A-1 Pictures, based on the manga by the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, is really about a guy slowly figuring out who he is by getting his hands dirty — literally. The comedy is warm and character-driven, and the agricultural setting feels genuinely lived-in rather than gimmicky. If you liked the rural slice-of-life charm of Barakamon or the weird educational appeal of Moyashimon, this hits a similar sweet spot. It's also got that same food appreciation energy as Shokugeki no Soma, just with way more cow manure involved.
