Synopsis

While tracking a demon through the wilderness, a Taoist priest stumbles onto something unexpected — a little girl who's been raised by the very creature he's tracking. She's been fed demon cores her whole life, which has fundamentally changed what she is, physically. The demon isn't abandoning her out of cruelty; a heavenly tribulation means it simply can't protect her anymore. So the priest takes her in, gives her the Taoist name Shang Shan, and the two set off wandering through ancient China, dealing with spirits and demons along the way. What makes this interesting is the dynamic at the center. You've got a girl who is partly demonic being raised by a man whose entire job is destroying demons. That tension between her nature and her new path gives the whole thing weight beyond just "monster of the week" encounters. The historical setting looks like it's going deep on actual Taoist demonology and ritual, not just using it as window dressing. If you liked the quiet, wandering atmosphere of Mushishi or the contemplative spirit encounters in Natsume's Book of Friends, this feels like it's in that lane — but with a stronger action edge and a mentor-disciple relationship closer to Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. Dangun Pictures is adapting this from a web manga as an ONA releasing in 2027, so it's one to keep on your radar. The blend of mysticism, historical grounding, and that central relationship between priest and demon-raised child could be something genuinely special.
