Synopsis
Raised in a convent with no family to speak of, Kotono Hayama now moonlights at a detective agency in a city where kids keep disappearing. During one of her investigations, she stumbles across an amnesiac boy named Ewan who hands her a tarot card — the Justice card — and suddenly she can transform into a Gothic Lolita magical girl called 'Loli Black.' From there, she and two other girls with their own tarot-powered transformations start unraveling a conspiracy tied to a shady organization called the Reverse Company. What makes this 26-episode TV series stand out from the usual magical girl fare is the tarot card system driving the powers and the genuine mystery woven through the story. It's not just monster-of-the-week — there's an actual detective angle, with the girls piecing together clues about who's behind the abductions and why. The Gothic Lolita aesthetic gives the whole thing a distinct visual identity that sets it apart from brighter entries in the genre. The tone shifts between cozy detective club hangouts and genuinely unsettling moments involving the Reverse Company's plans, so it keeps you on your toes. If you liked the magical mystery vibe of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne or the card-based powers of Cardcaptor Sakura, this scratches a similar itch with a darker edge. Fans of Shugo Chara's balance between lighthearted fun and real stakes will feel at home here too. It's a Studio Comet original from 2007 that flew under the radar, but it's worth tracking down.
