Rurouni Kenshin
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Once the most feared assassin in Japan, Himura Kenshin was the kind of guy whose name alone ended fights before they started. Now he's a soft-spoken wanderer with a reverse-blade sword and a vow never to kill again. That gap between who he was and who he's trying to be is basically the entire engine of this show. This 2023 remake covers the classic manga from the ground up: Kenshin drifts into Tokyo during the early Meiji era and crosses paths with Kaoru Kamiya, a dojo owner dealing with some fraud using his old reputation to terrorize the city. He steps in, things escalate, and before long he's got a found family forming around him — Sanosuke the street fighter, Yahiko the stubborn kid learning the sword, Megumi the doctor carrying her own baggage. The 24-episode TV series takes its time letting these relationships breathe between the sword fights. LIDENFILMS gave this a genuinely gorgeous visual treatment. The action choreography hits hard, but what sticks is the quieter stuff — Kenshin sitting with his guilt, the weight of choosing mercy when violence would be easier. The soundtrack weaves traditional Japanese instrumentation into the score in a way that feels earned, not decorative. If you liked Samurai Champloo's style or Blade of the Immortal's moral gray areas, this sits in similar territory but with a warmer heart. Fans of Peacemaker Kurogane's historical setting will feel right at home too. It's a thoughtful samurai story that doesn't rush past the human stuff to get to the next fight.
