Synopsis

A father's dream died with him, but a boxing ring and a brother-sister duo willing to fight for it keep that dream alive. Ryuji Takane is a junior high kid learning to fight, and his older sister Kiku is the one coaching him — not because she's some retired pro, but because she's genuinely sharp enough to break down technique and strategy from the corner. Their father wanted a champion, and they're going to make it happen together. The signature move here is the 'Boomerang Hook,' which sounds ridiculous on paper but fits perfectly in a show where boxing matches escalate with real shounen energy. Ryuji's rivalry with Jun Kenzaki drives the early episodes, and the tournament structure keeps things tight across 12 episodes — no filler, no dragging. This is a 2004 Toei Animation adaptation of a manga by the same creator behind Saint Seiya, and you can feel that DNA in how the fights are staged. The punches hit with dramatic weight, and rivals get proper buildup before they throw down. If you liked Hajime no Ippo for its heart and boxing fundamentals, this leans harder into the over-the-top technique side. And if Ashita no Joe is your thing but you want something less soul-crushing, Ring ni Kakero keeps the stakes high without the existential dread. The brother-sister dynamic gives it a warmth that grounds all the flashy ringwork. It's a quick watch and a solid piece of sports anime history.
