Redline
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Once every five years, some unsuspecting planet gets chosen as the venue for the galaxy's most dangerous race, and there's exactly one rule: none. Redline follows 'Sweet' JP, a pompadour-rocking daredevil who drives a souped-up Trans Am-looking machine and refuses to use weapons — in a race where everyone else absolutely does. He qualifies through some shady circumstances and ends up competing on Roboworld, a militarized planet that really, really does not want this race happening on their turf. There's also Sonoshee McLaren, the only other human in the lineup, and JP's got it bad for her in that hopeless, reckless kind of way. Here's the thing though — the plot is almost beside the point. This movie took seven years to make, with over 100,000 hand-drawn frames, and every single one of them looks insane. The animation is so fluid and detailed that screenshots alone could sell you on it. The aesthetic sits somewhere between retro 70s muscle car culture and far-future alien weirdness, backed by a techno soundtrack that locks you into the pace and never lets go. If you liked the visual energy of Akira or the absurd racing chaos of Speed Racer, this is right in that lane. It's a Madhouse production from 2009 that still looks better than most things coming out today. One movie, no filler, pure momentum from start to finish. Just strap in.
