Okitsura: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Know What She's Saying
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When his dad gets transferred to Okinawa, Tokyo kid Teru Nakamura is uprooted to a new life, and on his first day at a new high school, he meets Hina Kyan — this super friendly, outgoing girl who immediately takes him under his wing. There's just one problem: her Okinawan dialect is so thick he can barely understand half of what she's saying. She'll be passionately explaining local culture or saying something that might be really sweet, and Teru's just standing there nodding with zero comprehension. It's a 12-episode TV series that gets a lot of mileage out of that language gap, and honestly, it works better than you'd expect. The comedy isn't just "haha he doesn't understand" — there's genuine warmth in how Hina keeps trying to share her world with him regardless. Then there's Kana, Hina's best friend, who steps in as translator but clearly has her own feelings for Teru, which he's completely oblivious to. So you've got a love triangle where one side literally can't communicate and the other side won't. If you liked the regional dialect humor in Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki or the teasing romantic dynamic of Nagatoro-san, this hits a similar sweet spot. The Okinawan setting from studio Millepensee gives it a distinct look — bright beaches, local food, cultural details you don't usually see in school romcoms. It's light, it's funny, and the miscommunication angle keeps things from feeling stale.
