📖 SYNOPSIS

During Japan's Sengoku Period, three kids are trying to become ninjas — except they're terrible at it. That's basically the setup for Nintama Rantarou, a TV series that's been running since 1993 with over 27 seasons — and honestly, once you watch a few episodes, you get why it stuck around that long.

Rantarou comes from a low-ranking ninja family and enrolls at Ninjutsu Academy hoping to change his fortunes. He immediately falls in with Kirimaru, an orphan who's always hustling for cash through odd jobs, and Shinbei, a rich merchant's kid who'd rather eat and nap than train. Together they stumble through classes, annoy their surprisingly patient teachers, and somehow turn every ninja drill into a small disaster. The Sengoku Period setting gives it a nice historical flavor, but don't expect anything heavy — this is pure comedic slice-of-life with shuriken.

What makes it work is the enormous cast. Each character has a specific quirk or background that plays into the humor, and across hundreds of episodes, even minor classmates get their moments. It's episodic, so you can jump in pretty much anywhere without feeling lost.

If you liked the vibe of Ninja Kids!!! or the easygoing comedy of Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran, this hits a similar spot — low stakes, warm characters, and jokes that land without trying too hard. It's comfort food anime, basically.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love short ~10-minute episodic comedies you can binge without tracking complex plotlines
Sengoku-era ninja kids fumbling through academy life—think wholesome slapstick—sounds fun to you
Ajia-do's classic '90s animation style and vibrant character designs hit your nostalgia sweet spot
You want a family-friendly comedy built around Rantarou, Kirimaru, and Shinbei's chaotic trio dynamic

❌ SKIP IF...

You need an overarching story with real stakes—this is purely standalone episodic humor
Repetitive gag structures across episodes wear thin on you fast
Early '90s animation quality feels too dated compared to what you're used to watching
