📖 SYNOPSIS
Shinji Ikari is a lonely fourteen-year-old who gets called to Tokyo-3 by the father who abandoned him, only to learn the reason: he needs Shinji to climb inside a giant bio-mechanical robot and fight an Angel — a massive, alien entity threatening to end the world. That's the setup, and it sounds like standard mecha fare, but this is Evangelion, and nothing about it is standard. This movie is essentially a recap of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series plus a chunk of new material hinting at the story's conclusion. The "Death" half condenses the show into a tight, beautifully re-edited retelling, while "Rebirth" starts pushing into territory the series never fully resolved. If you've already seen the show, it's a gorgeous refresher with some new context. If you haven't, honestly, watch the series first — this works better as a companion piece than a standalone. The real draw here is the atmosphere. Shirō Sagisu's soundtrack hits different in a theatrical context, and Gainax plus Production I.G deliver animation that still holds up decades later. The psychological weight — Shinji's loneliness, his fractured relationship with his father, the quiet dread underneath every battle — that's what makes Evangelion Evangelion. If you vibed with the existential unease of Serial Experiments Lain or the way Puella Magi Madoka Magica deconstructs its genre from the inside, this is the granddaddy of that whole tradition. Just know going in: this is emotional, heavy, and deliberately uncomfortable.
