📖 SYNOPSIS

Imagine a beloved grandparent sitting you down and telling you a story, except the stories are centuries-old Japanese folktales and the grandparent is acclaimed actress Mari Natsuki, whose voice alone could make a grocery list feel magical. Mukashibanashi no Oheya is a TV anthology series that adapts traditional Japanese folklore — one tale per episode, no overarching plot, just pure standalone storytelling. You get the classics like Momotaro, the peach-born boy who rallies animal companions to fight ogres, alongside lesser-known regional tales you've probably never heard of. The animation style actually shifts between episodes to match each story's tone and cultural roots, which keeps things visually fresh in a way most anthology shows don't bother with. Some episodes are playful and weird, others are genuinely cautionary in that old-school fairy tale way where things don't always end neatly. It's aimed at kids, but honestly, if you're into folklore or just want something low-stakes and culturally rich to unwind with, the appeal crosses age lines pretty easily. If you grew up watching Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi or enjoyed Furusato Saisei: Nippon no Mukashibanashi, this is essentially the modern continuation of that tradition. Think of it less as a show you binge and more as a collection you dip into — bedtime story energy, but with real craft behind it. Studio Oddjob handles production, and the 2020 release keeps the visuals clean while respecting the warmth of the source material.
