After a drunken encounter, office worker Miss Kobayashi finds herself living with Tohru, a dragon maid, and their lives are forever changed by the arrival of more dragons.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Meet Kobayashi: a tired programmer who drinks too much and goes to work every day. That's it. That's her whole life — until she opens her front door one morning and finds a full-sized dragon on her balcony. Turns out, she got blackout drunk the night before, wandered into the mountains, pulled a holy sword out of this dragon's back, and casually invited her to come live at her apartment. The dragon, Tohru, takes her up on the offer by shapeshifting into a cheerful girl in a maid outfit and declaring herself Kobayashi's devoted maid. What follows across 13 episodes is a surprisingly warm slice-of-life about two very different beings figuring out how to be a family. Tohru tries to cook her own tail for dinner. More dragons show up and enroll in elementary school. The mundane and the mythical just kind of coexist, and Kyoto Animation makes every frame of it look gorgeous — the animation during even small moments has more craft than most action shows. The heart of the whole thing is watching Kobayashi, who's emotionally reserved to a fault, slowly open up to this chaotic found family she never asked for. If you liked the fish-out-of-water comedy of The Devil is a Part-Timer or the cozy supernatural comfort of The Helpful Fox Senko-san, this hits a similar spot but with more personality and better animation. It's gentle without being boring, funny without trying too hard.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love heartfelt found-family stories wrapped in a goofy fantasy-meets-mundane-life setup
Kyoto Animation's gorgeous, fluid animation style is a big draw for you
You want a short 13-episode comedy that balances warmth with genuinely funny dragon antics
Kobayashi and Tohru's slow-building relationship—across worlds and species—sounds appealing to you

❌ SKIP IF...

Repeated fan-service gags—especially involving Lucoa's design—are a dealbreaker for you
You're looking for a plot-heavy narrative instead of episodic slice-of-life character moments
Tonal whiplash between lighthearted comedy and sudden serious dragon-world conflict bothers you
