Mirage of Blaze: Rebels of the River Edge
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Carrying a heavy secret — he's the reincarnation of a feudal warlord, and his job is exorcising vengeful spirits that refuse to stay in the past — high school student Takaya Ougi is not your typical teenager. In this 3-episode OVA from Madhouse, Takaya gets sent to Kyoto to track down the re-awakening of the Ikko sect and a deserter named Araki Murashige, who's hunting a 400-year-old mandala woven from the hair of his dead clansmen. It's already a strange mission, and then it gets personal. His vassal Haruie recognizes Araki as someone from her own past life — her lover — and suddenly the line between duty and old grief gets very complicated. The show layers supernatural action over genuine emotional weight, asking what you owe the people you were before you were you. It's not a slow burn exactly, but it rewards patience; the historical reincarnation angle gives every confrontation a backstory stretching back centuries. If you liked The Betrayal Knows My Name for its brooding supernatural drama and complicated relationships between men, this covers similar ground with a sharper historical edge. Fans of Tactics will also recognize the mix of folklore, exorcism, and unresolved emotional tension. The Boys Love elements are understated rather than front-and-center, so don't expect anything explicit — this leans more into duty, sacrifice, and the weight of memory. Three episodes means it's a tight watch, though it assumes you're at least loosely familiar with the broader Mirage of Blaze story.
