Synopsis

When his detective uncle drags him along for what should be a routine investigation, Kenichi arrives in Metropolis — a gleaming, jazz-soaked city of the future where robots and humans share streets but definitely not equal rights. The city is gorgeous on the surface and ugly underneath, run by a powerful figure named Duke Red whose ambitions stretch way beyond normal political corruption. Somewhere in the middle of all this is Tima, an android girl who doesn't quite know what she is yet, and Kenichi's connection with her pulls the whole story into surprisingly emotional territory. Don't expect a cold, clinical sci-fi film — there's genuine warmth here, and the romance angle hits harder than you'd anticipate going in. The animation mixes hand-drawn character work with early CGI in a way that gives the city this dense, layered texture, and the jazz soundtrack running through everything makes it feel unlike almost any anime you've seen. If you liked Akira's sense of a city on the edge of collapse, or Ghost in the Shell's interest in what it means to be human, Metropolis sits comfortably in that same conversation. It's a single movie from Madhouse, based on Osamu Tezuka's manga, so the commitment is just two hours. A solid rainy afternoon watch.
