Set in 19th-century Genoa, Italy, the anime follows nine-year-old Marco as he grapples with his mother Anna's departure for Argentina. She leaves to escape economic hardship and heavy taxes, hoping to find work. Marco, left with his father, a doctor, deeply misses his mother.
