Macross 7 Encore
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Already invested in the Macross world, this little OVA earns your time through how each of its three unaired episodes covers completely different ground. The first episode drops the fleet into a confrontation with a rogue Meltrandi faction led by an old rival of Milia, which plays out as equal parts tense and absurd as two battle-hardened women hash out old grudges while their cultures collide. The second episode is the real gem: a backstory for Ray and Basara, showing how a former fighter pilot crossed paths with a guy who thinks blasting rock music at enemy mechs is a legitimate combat strategy, and how that meeting somehow turned into Fire Bomber. It's the kind of origin story that recontextualizes characters you thought you already understood. If you liked Macross Delta's blend of idol pop and space combat, or the more character-driven quieter moments in Macross Plus Movie Edition, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Martian Successor Nadesico might also appreciate how it balances genuine drama with comedy that doesn't undercut the emotional beats. It's only three episodes, so the commitment is minimal, but each one feels distinct rather than filler. This works best as a companion piece to the main series rather than an entry point, but for Macross 7 fans it fills in gaps that actually matter.
