After escaping his embarrassing chuunibyou past, Yuuta's hopes for a normal high school life are shattered when he meets the eccentric Rikka, who embraces her own delusions.

📖 SYNOPSIS

All through middle school, Yuuta Togashi called himself the 'Dark Flame Master,' complete with dramatic poses and a trench coat. Now he's starting high school determined to bury that past and be a normal guy. Then Rikka Takanashi shows up — eyepatch, delusions of wielding a mystical 'Wicked Eye,' the whole deal — and she's his neighbor. She's basically everything he's trying to run from, and naturally she latches onto him because she knows about his old persona. This 12-episode TV series from Kyoto Animation is a comedy-romance that nails something weirdly specific: the cringe of remembering who you were at 14 and the quiet question of whether killing that version of yourself is actually a good idea. The fantasy sequences are gorgeous — KyoAni animates Rikka's delusions as full-blown action scenes that cut back to reality mid-swing, and the contrast is both hilarious and oddly touching. Around them, a small club forms with characters who each have their own relationship with their embarrassing pasts, and the dynamic stays funny without getting mean about it. The romance builds slowly and honestly, grounded in the idea that accepting someone means accepting the weird parts too. If you liked the eccentric-girl energy of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or the rom-com awkwardness of Oreshura, this hits a similar space but with more emotional weight underneath the laughs. It's warm, it's funny, and it earns its quieter moments.
