Fruits Basket 1st Season
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Tooru Honda, reeling from the loss of her mother, ends up living in a tent because she has nowhere else to go. Turns out the tent is on land owned by the Souma family, which includes Yuki — the most popular boy at her school — and his older cousin Shigure. They take her in, and things seem like a fairly standard living-together setup until she accidentally hugs one of them and he turns into a rat. Certain members of the Souma family are cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when embraced by the opposite sex, and each one carries emotional baggage tied to that curse. The 25-episode first season is really about Tooru slowly earning the trust of these deeply guarded people, and the show handles it with a patience that actually pays off. TMS Entertainment gave this 2019 adaptation gorgeous animation that makes every emotional beat land harder — the character expressions alone carry entire scenes. It blends genuine warmth with humor that never undercuts the heavier moments, and the soundtrack knows exactly when to pull back and when to hit you. If you liked the found-family heart of Clannad or the charm of Ouran High School Host Club, this sits comfortably in that space while being its own thing. Fans of Kamisama Kiss will find a similar supernatural-romance warmth here too. Don't expect nonstop drama — this one builds slowly, and that's exactly what makes it worth it.
