Fruits Basket -prelude-
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Before Tohru Honda grew up to become the warm, selfless heart of Fruits Basket, her mother Kyoko had a full story of her own — and this movie finally tells it. As a teenager, Kyoko is basically written off by everyone. Her parents don't care, school doesn't work, and she falls into gang life because at least there she matters to someone. Then Katsuya Honda walks in — a student teacher who, for reasons she can't figure out, actually pays attention to the person underneath all that anger. Their relationship unfolds slowly, built on small moments of honesty rather than grand gestures, and watching Kyoko go from someone who's given up on herself to someone who chooses to build a life worth having is genuinely moving. This is a single movie from TMS Entertainment, adapted from the manga, and it works both as a companion piece for existing fans and as a standalone love story. The animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack knows exactly when to pull back and when to hit hard, and the emotional weight of knowing where Kyoko's story eventually leads adds a layer that's hard to shake. If Clannad wrecked you, or if Your Lie in April left you staring at a wall for an hour afterward, this lives in that same space — romantic and bittersweet without ever feeling manipulative. It's the kind of movie that makes you appreciate the Fruits Basket series on a completely different level, because now you understand where all that warmth Tohru carries actually came from.
