Synopsis

When a yakuza gangster faces the threat of a terrible tattoo, he begs a middle schooler to teach him how to sing. That's the setup for Karaoke Iko, and it only gets better from there. Satomi Oka is a perfectionist choir leader who just led his group to second place at nationals — which, in his mind, is basically last place. He's spiraling about graduating and leaving the choir behind when Kyouji Narita, a smooth-talking gangster, shows up with a problem. See, Kyouji's yakuza crew holds an annual karaoke contest, and whoever comes in dead last gets stuck with an ugly tattoo courtesy of the boss. Kyouji is desperate enough to recruit a middle schooler as his vocal coach, and Satomi is just lost enough to say yes. What follows across five short episodes is this weird, genuinely funny odd-couple dynamic between a kid who takes music way too seriously and a grown man in organized crime who takes karaoke way too seriously. Doga Kobo handles the comedic timing well, and the contrast between Satomi's disciplined choir world and Kyouji's chaotic gangster life carries the whole thing. If you liked the yakuza-meets-mundane-life energy of Gokushufudou or want something with the musical heart of BanG Dream but way more absurd, this is a good time. It's five episodes, so you can knock it out in one sitting. Low commitment, high payoff.
