Les Misérables: Shoujo Cosette
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At only three years old, Cosette is left with strangers by her mother, who promises to come back once she has enough money. The strangers are the Thénardiers, and they are not kind people. That's the setup for this 52-episode TV series adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, and it does not soften the source material. Cosette scrubs floors, sleeps in the cold, and watches the Thénardier children get everything she's denied — all while holding onto the hope that her mother is coming. Then a quiet, mysterious man named Jean Valjean crosses her path, and things begin to shift. The show takes its time building this world, leaning into the emotional weight of 19th-century French society without rushing toward resolution. It's the kind of series that rewards patience — character-driven, heavy on atmosphere, and genuinely concerned with what poverty and injustice actually look like on a human level. If you watched Kemono no Souja Erin and appreciated how it treated a young girl's hardships with real seriousness, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of Gankutsuou who want a more grounded, less stylized take on classic French literature will also find a lot here. It's not flashy. It's a slow, emotional burn through one of the most enduring stories ever written, told with care.
