Laughing Under the Clouds
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In 1878 Japan, the Kumō brothers run a ferry service hauling criminals to a massive lake prison—and that's just the start. That's already a pretty solid setup, but then it gets weird. Set right after the samurai era officially ended, Donten ni Warau follows the Kumō brothers—Tenka, the eldest who grins through everything and carries more weight than he lets on; Soramaru, the middle brother desperate to step out of Tenka's shadow; and Chūtarō, the youngest, who's mostly just happy to be included. Their job is transporting criminals across Lake Biwa to a government prison, but what starts as a historical action story about post-samurai unrest quietly layers in supernatural conspiracies that shift the whole direction of the show. The brotherly dynamic is the real core here. Tenka's protectiveness, Soramaru's frustration, the way they clash and depend on each other—it's handled with genuine emotional weight across just 12 episodes, so nothing overstays its welcome. If you liked Rurouni Kenshin's Meiji-era setting but want something tighter and more focused on family bonds, this fits. Fans of Noragami's mix of action and mythology with underlying emotional stakes will find a similar vibe. The supernatural elements creep in gradually, and by the midpoint you're watching a very different show than where you started. Doga Kobo animated it, which might surprise you given their usual comedy catalog, but the action sequences hold up well. It's a solid, complete story that doesn't waste your time.
