Synopsis

At 32, realtor Reiko Kujirai lives in the Second Kowloon Walled City — a sprawling, crumbling urban maze that should feel oppressive but somehow feels like home. She's quietly in love with her coworker Hajime Kudou, and their daily routine of sharing lunches and wandering Kowloon's neon-lit back alleys has a warm, lived-in quality to it. But something is off. Not dramatically off — more like a detail in a photograph you can't quite place, a conversation that doesn't line up with what you remember. The show lets that unease build slowly, layered underneath what initially looks like a straightforward workplace romance between two adults. This is a 13-episode TV series from Arvo Animation adapted from a seinen manga, and it's doing something genuinely unusual with its genre blend. The romance is grounded and mature — no melodrama, just two people navigating feelings in a world that feels increasingly unreliable. The mystery and sci-fi elements creep in at the edges, raising questions about memory, identity, and whether the nostalgic city around them is what it appears to be. The setting itself is a character — dense, atmospheric, full of texture. If you liked the slow-burn emotional tension of After the Rain, the reality-bending unease of Steins;Gate, or the way Erased made you question what's real and what's constructed, this one threads a similar needle. It's patient, moody, and quietly unsettling in the best way.

Even knowing what is to come, the heartbreak of realizing Kujirai B's gambling her life at the peak of her happiness have driven Kudo to regret was heartbreaking to witness. But heartwarming as well with Reiko pushing Kudo to save himself and give himself the words he needed to hear before she encourage herself to step out of Kowloon. The conclusion was a fun mystery to follow until the end. Definitely a fun show to watch.

For a 13-episode series and an anime-only watcher, I can see the decent effort of tying everything up. Miyuki was such a wholesome bastard. The sudden shock reveal of Kowloon being based on Kudo's perception that I did not see coming. Reiko's affirmation of her self-identity as she come to terms of Kujirai B's self harm. Excellent.

One of the most satisfying and heartbreaking episode of all time. Watching Yaomay moving without regret, not knowing she's dooming her relationship with Reko-pon made me feel proud and sad at the same time. AAAAAAAAA!
