Kotaro Lives Alone
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Kotarou Satou, a four-year-old boy no bigger than a grocery bag, moves into an apartment complex by himself. No parents, no relatives, just a kid carrying boxes of tissues to gift his new neighbors. He speaks like a feudal lord, does his own grocery shopping, and handles his daily routine with a composure most adults can't manage. His next-door neighbor, Shin Karino, a struggling manga artist, can't help but keep an eye on the kid, and slowly the other residents of the complex start looking out for him too. Kotarou Lives Alone is a 10-episode ONA from LIDENFILMS, adapted from a seinen manga, and it walks this tightrope between genuinely funny and quietly devastating. Kotarou's formal speech and serious attitude create constant comedic moments, but the show never lets you forget why a four-year-old might need to be this independent. It doesn't rush to explain everything — it lets the weight of his situation settle in gradually while you're busy laughing at him critiquing Karino's lifestyle choices. The found-family dynamic that builds between Kotarou and the apartment residents is the real heart here. If you liked Usagi Drop or the warmth of Sweetness and Lightning, this hits similar notes but with a premise that's more bittersweet. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari fans will also find a lot to connect with. It's short, it's wholesome, and it will probably make you cry at least once without warning.
